A quick post to acknowledge how annoying it is when the ‘pre check’ ahead of a simple upgrade passes – yet the upgrade itself fails and leaves the SDDC Manager broken and lonely.
Todays issue was caused by the expiry of the root password on the management workload domain vCenter (PSC). You’d have thought a pre-check would have checked for that ahead of an upgrade but no.
Fortunately we all have a robust offline copy of the passwords from lookup_passwords, quick SSH in, change the password, echo “” > /etc/security/opasswd (forget password history), change it back to the old one with passwd root, and reboot the SDDC Manager and let it return to us.
